Cancer Prevention in the Survivorship Setting.

To describe how nurses can use risk reduction and health promotion activities to facilitate surveillance of late effects and secondary cancers in long-term cancer survivors. Literature review on survivorship, nursing practice, cancer prevention, and survivorship; articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals; and Web-based or professional organization resources. Appropriate participation in screening activities, early detection of cancer, and further advances in treatment have contributed to the rise in cancer survivors. A demand for nurses with clinical experience and competence in survivorship care will follow. Oncology nurses have an essential role in providing safe and high-quality care throughout the survivorship experience, which can contribute to better long-term outcomes.

Evolving nursing science and practice in cancer survivorship.

To review the status of cancer survivorship care planning and delivery, resources and tools available to advance care, and explore professional nursing's potential to affect the quality of care available to cancer survivors. Published peer reviewed literature, web-based resources, and cancer-related professional organizations' resources. The population of cancer survivors is characterized as "booming," and available resources are also booming. Professionals involved in planning and delivering cancer survivorship care have access to tested tools, resources, information, and data useful for programmatic strategic planning and individualized survivor care plans. There are significant challenges to implementation, but there are also hopeful indicators that holistic care and services can be both cost-effective and used to improve care and quality of life for survivors. Nurses have significant roles in the planning and delivery of survivorship care. There are as yet no clearly defined pathways, guidelines, and standard metrics that reflect the value of these nursing roles, though there are interesting and intriguing early indicators of value that should stimulate the imagination of oncology nurses regardless of care setting, geographic location, and population to be served.

'Re-engage' pilot study protocol: a nurse-led eHealth intervention to re-engage, educate and empower childhood cancer survivors.

Many childhood cancer survivors are disengaged from cancer-related follow-up care despite being at high risk of treatment-related late effects. Innovative models of long-term follow-up (LTFU) care to manage ongoing treatment-related complications are needed. 'Re-engage' is a nurse-led eHealth intervention designed to improve survivors' health-related self-efficacy, targeted at survivors disengaged from follow-up. Re-engage aims to overcome survivor- and parent-reported barriers to care and ensure survivors receive the care most appropriate to their risk level. This study will recruit 30 Australian childhood cancer survivors who are not receiving any cancer-related care. Participation involves two online/telephone consultations with a survivorship nurse for medical assessment, a case review, risk stratification and creation of a care plan by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. We will assess the feasibility of implementing 'Re-engage' and its acceptability to participants and health professionals involved. The primary outcome will be survivors' health-related self-efficacy, measured at baseline and 1 and 6 months postintervention. Secondary outcomes will include the effect of 'Re-engage' on survivors' health behaviours and beliefs, engagement in healthcare, information needs and emotional well-being. We will also document the cost per patient to deliver 'Re-engage'. If Re-engage is acceptable, feasible and demonstrates early efficacy, it may have the potential to empower survivors in coordinating their complex care, improving survivors' long-term engagement and satisfaction with care. Ideally, it will be implemented into clinical practice to recall survivors lost to follow-up and reduce the ongoing burden of treatment for childhood cancer. The study protocol has been approved by the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Human Research Ethics Committee (reference number: 16/366). Provision of survivorship care for patients with haematological malignancy at completion of treatment: A cancer nursing practice survey study.

Many haematological cancer survivors report long-term physiological and psychosocial effects, which persist far beyond treatment completion. Cancer services have been required to extend care to the post-treatment phase to implement survivorship care strategies into routine practice. As key members of the multidisciplinary team, cancer nurses' perspectives are essential to inform future developments in survivorship care provision. This is a pilot survey study, involving 119 nurses caring for patients with haematological malignancy in an Australian tertiary cancer care centre. The participants completed an investigator developed survey designed to assess cancer care nurses' perspectives on their attitudes, confidence levels, and practice in relation to post-treatment survivorship care for patients with a haematological malignancy. Overall, the majority of participants agreed that all of the survivorship interventions included in the survey should be within the scope of the nursing role. Nurses reported being least confident in discussing fertility and employment/financial issues with patients and conducting psychosocial distress screening. The interventions performed least often included, discussing fertility, intimacy and sexuality issues and communicating survivorship care with the patient's primary health care providers. Nurses identified lack of time, limited educational resources, lack of dedicated end-of-treatment consultation and insufficient skills/knowledge as the key barriers to survivorship care provision. Cancer centres should implement an appropriate model of survivorship care and provide improved training and educational resources for nurses to enable them to deliver quality survivorship care and meet the needs of haematological cancer survivors.

The Role of Survivorship Care for Patients with Glioma.

To discuss the role of survivorship care and survivorship care plans, including a recently developed neuro-oncology-specific plan care (https://www.soc-neuro-onc.org/SNO/Resources/Survivorship_Care_Plan.aspx) for adult patients diagnosed with primary glial neoplasms and the necessary educational needs of oncology nurses. Published peer-reviewed literature and resources from cancer and neuro-oncology professional organizations and patient advocacy organizations. The current Commission on Cancer mandates adult cancer patients treated with curative intent each receive an individualized survivorship care plan. Patients with glioma are likely to benefit from receiving survivorship care, including survivorship care plans aimed at addressing the complex and evolving needs of this unique patient population throughout their illness trajectory. Nurse professionals are critical to the development and implementation of cancer survivorship care. This growing leadership role presents oncology nurses with specific and new educational needs regarding survivorship care.
