The Official Journal of the European Society of Veterinary Dermatology, the American College of Veterinary Dermatology and the European College of Veterinary Dermatology. Veterinary Dermatology is a quarterly, peer-reviewed, international journal which publishes papers on all aspects of the skin of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Clinical case reports, scientific research papers and reviews covering the diagnosis, treatment and control of skin disease, skin pharmacology, structure and function of skin, and the production of hides, skins and skin products, will be considered.

Canine pigmented viral plaques associated with application of potent topical glucocorticoids.
A six-year-old atopic boxer presented with pigmented viral plaques on the interdigital spaces and pinnae following treatment with potent topical glucocorticoids. The lesions regressed after treatment was discontinued, and recurred each time a topical glucocorticoid was resumed. A Chipapillomavirus was amplified from lesional tissue.

Using colorimetric in situ hybridisation method for FcaPV-2 to estimate postsurgical prognosis in feline Bowenoid in situ carcinoma.
Feline Bowenoid in situ carcinoma (BISC) is frequently associated with Felis catus papillomavirus-2 (FcaPV-2). Although surgical excision of BISC is expected to be curative, recurrent lesions are reported and it is not known whether it is a consequence of incomplete surgery or residual viral load. To combine colorimetric in situ hybridisation (CISH) and quantitative (q)PCR for the detection of viral DNA, and to correlate the clinical outcome of cats with BISC in which FcaPV-2 DNA is detected at surgical margins. Twenty-seven cats with a histopathological diagnosis of BISC. Sections including core and margins of the lesions were used for histopathological evaluation, qPCR and CISH. After surgical removal of the lesion, clinical follow-up data were recorded for 6 months. Six of 12 cases in which all four histological margins were evaluable were used to correlate the infection status at the margins with the follow-up data. Four showed margin positivity, of which half relapsed as expected and half cured; two cases were negative, of which one cured as expected while the other relapsed. Fifteen cases where only three, two or one of the histological margins were evaluable, were considered to adequately correlate the status of infection with the follow-up data if CISH was positive. Follow-up data were available for three with positive margins: one relapsed while the other two were cured. Wide clinical surgical margins are always recommended for neoplastic conditions, yet there was no evidence that CISH margin examination would be beneficial in predicting recurrence in this viral-induced lesion.

Ultraviolet radiation protection factors of livestock shade cloths for free-range pigs.
Protection from solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is paramount in light-skinned pig breeds such as Yorkshire or Landrace to avoid sunburn. Determination of the UVR exposure of a pig and the sun protection abilities of shade cloths with different shade rates. Life-sized plastic model of a Landrace pig. The model was equipped with 20 UVR meters at various anatomical positions that recorded the erythemal effective solar irradiance. A turntable enabled irradiation from different directions. Solar irradiance was measured in direct sunlight as well as under three shade cloths with different shade rates (50%, 75% and 90%) and a camouflage net. The sun protection factors (SPF) were determined as the ratio of unshaded-to-shaded measurements at the same solar elevation. The exposure ratio to ambient (ERTA) was calculated for each body site with respect to ambient irradiance. It allows determination of when pigs are at risk of sunburn and protection is needed. The calculated ERTA values show that some body parts may receive higher values than ambient UVR. Measurements showed that the SPF of shade cloths depends on textile denseness. Selected shade cloths reached values of 3.5 (shade rate 50%), 4.2 (75%) and 5.8 (90%). Protection by the camouflage net was poor. The highest SPF was gained on body sides where ERTA was highest. Shade cloths can protect all body sites effectively and vulnerable sites in particular. The results of our study enable an estimation of when pigs are at risk of sunburn and provide quantitative metrics for sun protection. This allows effective prevention of UVR-caused skin damage and secondary disorders.

A prospective study evaluating the adhesive tape impression for the diagnosis of dermatophytosis in dogs and cats.
Potential contagion and zoonotic risk make rapid diagnosis of dermatophytosis important amongst companion animals. To compare the adhesive tape impression (ATI), trichogram, Wood's lamp (WL) examination and fungal culture for diagnosis of dermatophytosis, and the ATI and trichogram for ease of use. Five dogs and 15 cats with consistent lesions, history and at least two positive dermatophyte test results. After WL examination, one representative lesion per patient was sampled for ATI, trichogram and fungal culture. Microscopic detection of fungal elements on ATI and trichogram were objectively and subjectively compared. The ability of all tests to correctly detect dermatophytosis, and the ability of ATI and trichogram to detect fungal elements in >20 high-powered fields (HPF) were compared using Fisher's exact tests. ATI, trichogram, fungal culture and WL were positive in 100% (20 of 20), 90% (18 of 20), 95% (19 of 20) and 65% (13 of 20) of patients, respectively, with a significant difference between WL and ATI (p = 0.0499). Fungal culture revealed Microsporum. canis (n = 16), Nannizzia gypsea (n = 1), Trichophyton mentagrophytes (n = 1) and T. rubrum (n = 1). Fungal elements were detected in >20 HPF more frequently with ATI (18 of 20) than trichogram (11 of 20) (p = 0.017), and detection required careful scanning to distinguish from background debris more often with trichogram. Fungal elements were located with neutrophil clusters and keratinocyte rafts in addition to abnormal hair fragments more frequently on ATI. ATI had the highest ability to correctly diagnose dermatophytosis, and increased ease of detecting fungal elements compared to trichogram.

Skin barrier, phenotypic and genotypic characterisation of autosomal recessive ichthyosis in TGM1-deficient Jack Russell Terriers and response to topical ceramide.
Autosomal recessive ichthyosis leads to structural or biochemical changes that impair skin barrier function. To assess (1) the phenotype and genotype in a litter of Jack Russell Terriers with autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI), and (2) the defective skin barrier and determine if a topical ceramide can modulate the barrier. A healthy dam and litter of Jack Russell Terrier puppies (healthy male, affected male and female), one affected adult Jack Russell Terrier and one unrelated healthy Jack Russell Terrier. A severe cornification defect was identified via examination of affected puppies. As the phenotype worsened, the affected puppies received a topical application of ω-0-acylceramide for 10 days. Before humane euthanasia, the skin barrier was evaluated via transepidermal water loss (TEWL), corneometry and pH in affected dogs. Genomic testing was performed, and skin samples were analysed by light and electron microscopy. Affected puppies were homozygous for the 1980 bp LINE-1 insertion in the TGM1 (transglutaminase 1) gene; the unaffected littermate and the dam were heterozygous carriers. ARCI puppies were underweight and had a severe hyperkeratotic phenotype that impaired mobility. TEWL was markedly higher in affected dogs. The cutaneous pH of affected puppies was higher than the normal littermate. Treatment of the skin with ω-0-acylceramide normalised the pH to match the littermate and decreased TEWL. Electron microscopy revealed marked attenuation of the cornified envelope. Dogs with TGM1-deficient ARCI have an impaired skin barrier. Topical therapy can partially repair the barrier defect.
