  • Strategic outsourcing of clinical services: a model for volume-stressed academic medical centers.

    Many academic medical centers have significant capacity constraints and limited ability to expand services to meet demand. Health care management should employ strategic thinking to deal with service demands. This article uses three organizational models to develop a theoretical framework to guide the selection of clinical services for outsourcing.

  • The effects of open access on member satisfaction and intentions to remain in an HMO.

    :This study is the first empirical test of the strategic importance of member autonomy and open access in a managed care environment. The model utilized in this study assesses the relative importance of autonomy in selecting specialists (open access), service convenience, value/pricing, and HMO resources on member satisfaction with care and intentions to remain with the HMO.

  • Understanding stakeholder power and influence gaps in a health care organization: an empirical study.

    :Scholars have vigorously debated the role of stakeholders since Freeman's 1984 landmark work. This article argues that an accurate assessment of relative power levels can enable stakeholders to accept their proper roles and responsibilities in planning and implementing strategy and enabling Top Management Teams to more fully integrate stakeholders' interest into the planning process.

  • The corporate social responsiveness orientation of hospital directors: does occupational background make a difference?

    :The results of a survey of 184 directors from 15 hospitals are analyzed to determine their corporate social responsiveness orientation. They indicate that board members whose occupational background is not in health care exhibit greater concern for economic performance and the legal component of corporate responsibility than their counterparts whose occupational background is in health care. No significant differences between the two groups were observed with respect to the ethical and discretionary dimensions of corporate social responsibility. Some explanations as well as limited generalizations and implications are developed.

  • The more things change, the more they stay the same.

    :For decades, the hospital environment has been described as turbulent and hostile. At the same time, the transfer of business practices into hospitals has been advocated, accompanied by the largely untested assumption that these practices are crucial to performance and even survival. As this pattern became entrenched, the accumulated knowledge gained within the industry of managing in a hostile and turbulent environment has been overlooked. We argue that it is time to question the pattern.
