Psychiatric Wards Nurses' Experiences on Self-Compassion, Compassionate Care and Compassion Fatigue: A Qualitative Study.

Compassion is an important component of providing quality nursing care, and the literature on compassionate care in psychiatric nursing is limited. The aim of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the experiences of psychiatric ward nurses regarding self-compassion, compassionate care and compassion fatigue. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted by thematic analysis with an inductive approach of semi-structured interviews with 16 psychiatric nurses across psychiatric ward in a state hospital, Kirkuk, Iraq, selected through purposeful sampling between 15 October and 15 November 2023. The analysis of the data, two main themes emerged: 'freedom in difficulties' and 'togetherness of suffering'. These results indicate that psychiatric nurses need individual and organizational resources to provide compassionate care. It is thought that developing programmes to improve the self-compassionate care of psychiatric nurses by institution managers and policy makers may be effective in reducing compassion fatigue and providing compassionate care. In the future research, how religion affects psychiatric nurses' ability to provide compassionate care and the role of belief in coping with compassion fatigue experienced by psychiatric nurses needs to be investigated.

Learning and Giving Compassionate Care to Patients: Perspectives of the ICU Nurses.

Compassion forms the basis for nursing practice and is an essential component of patient-centered care. It is vital, essential and of great significance to relieve patient's suffering and have a positive impact on the quality of care provided by a nurse. In the context of Tanzania, knowledge on learning and giving compassionate nursing care to patients remained unresearched. To explore nurse's perspectives on how they learn and give compassionate nursing care to patients in ICUs in Tanzania. A qualitative descriptive study design using in-depth interviews was conducted amongst eleven (11) ICU nurses of two hospitals in Dodoma region. Audio-recording and notetaking were used to collect data. Data from the audio records were transcribed verbatim and subjected to inductive thematic analysis using manifest codding approach with a semantic focus. We report this paper according to COREQ checklist. Three themes emerged from data that summarised the nurses' perspectives on learning and giving compassionate care to patients in ICUs. These themes included (i) Sources and learning of compassionate nursing care (ii) Practicing compassionate nursing care and (iii) impact of compassionate nursing care. Overall, nurses in this setting expressed compassion to as a combination of empathy, ethical view, duty to care and readiness to go extra mile to address patients needs defined their unique view of compassion. Emphasis of compassionate nursing care in formal training curricula, role modelling on compassion in clinical settings and motivation of nurses in critical care settings may facilitate provision of compassionate nursing care amongst patients in ICUs. The findings of the present study underscore the nurse's perspectives on compassionate nursing care and what motivates and prevents them to provide compassionate care to patients. The relationship between self-compassion and caring behaviour in nurses: A cross-sectional study.

To examine the relationship between self-compassion and caring behaviour in nurses. Self-compassion can influence nurses' ability to cope with stress and their job performance. High levels of self-compassion may play a role in nurses' coping with compassion fatigue and burnout. This may make the concept of self-compassion in nurses an important variable for effective care. This is a cross-sectional study. Study data were collected between March and May 2022 from 331 nurses at a hospital in the city of Antalya, Turkey. A personal information form, the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), and the Caring Behaviour Inventory-24 (CBI-24) were used to collect data, and the program SPSS 23.0 was used in data evaluation. Descriptive statistical methods, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used in the analysis of data. The STROBE checklist was followed for this cross-sectional study. The nurses' mean scores were 3.50 ± 0.61 on SCS and 5.21 ± 0.56 on CBI-24. A positive correlation was found between the nurses' self-compassion levels and caring behaviour. Also, the SCS sub-dimension of mindfulness, working in intensive care and working willingly in the nursing profession significantly predicted caring behaviour. These variables explain 19.4% of the variance of caring behaviour. The nurses' self-compassion levels were medium and their caring behaviour was at a high level, and caring behaviour was higher in those who worked in intensive care, those who were working willingly in the nursing profession, and in those with high scores on the self-compassion sub-dimension of mindfulness. It is important to strengthen nurses' self-compassion skills to develop their caring behaviour. In particular, giving nurses in clinics mindfulness-based education will help them to increase their awareness concerning their own lives and to develop their caring behaviour.

Compassionate nursing care and the use of digital health technologies: A scoping review.

Compassion is an essential component of quality patient-centered care and a core value in nursing practice. Although much work has been done to enhance nurses' informatics competency, there is limited understanding of how nurses can use, express, and preserve compassion when they use digital health technologies in the provision of patient care. This study aimed to explore the nursing literature on how nurses provide compassionate care when they use digital health technologies. A secondary aim was to identify best practices that could be used to guide nursing education and practice toward enhancing compassionate care in digital environment. A scoping review was conducted to address the following research question: What is known about compassionate care in relation to the use of digital health technologies within the nursing literature? A comprehensive search strategy was applied to CINAHL Plus with full text, Ovid Medline, Ovid HealthStar, Embase, APAPsychINFO, Scopus, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. In addition, a search of selected organizational websites and a hand search of reference lists of included studies were conducted. The eligibility of articles was determined by two reviewers independently. Descriptive and content analyses were applied. Findings were presented narratively and in a tabular format. Twenty-eight articles were included in this review. Most of this research was published between 2004 and 2020, using mostly qualitative methods. Narrative results were organized into three themes: 1) evolving understanding of compassionate nursing care in relation to use of digital health technology, 2) compassionate nursing care in relation to the type of digital health technology, and 3) strategies and interventions to improve education and competence relevant to digital health and compassionate nursing care. The use of technology influences how nurses do their work and interact with patients. As advances in digital health continue to evolve, future research should aim to expand understanding of compassion relevant to digital health by articulating its characteristics and associated competencies for nurses to further enhance their ability to provide compassionate care when digital health technologies and services are used to support care delivery. A scoping review that identified how nurses can provide compassionate nursing care in technologically rich practice environments.
