Knowledge landscape of tumor-associated neutrophil: a bibliometric and visual analysis from 2000-2024.
Neutrophils have long been consistently adjudged to hold a dominant position in acute inflammation, which once led people to undervalue their role in chronic malignancy. It is now acknowledged that neutrophils also infiltrate into the tumor microenvironment in substantial quantities and form a highly abundant immune population within the tumor, known as tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs). There has been a surge of interest in researching the eminent heterogeneity and plasticity of TANs in recent years, and scholars increasingly cotton on to the multifaceted functions of TANs so that strenuous endeavors have been devoted to enunciating their potential as therapeutic targets. Yet it remains much left to translate TAN-targeted immunotherapies into clinical practice. Therefore, there is great significance to comprehensively appraise the research status, focal point, and evolution trend of TAN by using bibliometric analysis.
Publications related to TAN research from 2000 to 2024 are extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis and visualization were performed by tools encompassing Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, R-bibliometrix, and so on.
The bibliometric analysis included a total of 788 publications authored by 5291 scholars affiliated with 1000 institutions across 58 countries/regions, with relevant articles published in 324 journals. Despite China's maximum quantity of publications and top 10 institutions, the United States is the leading country with the most high-quality publications and is also the global cooperation center. FRONTIERS IN IMMUNOLOGY published the most papers, whereas CANCER RESEARCH is the highest co-cited journal. Israeli professor Fridlender, Zvi G. is the founder, pioneer, and cultivator with the highest citation counts and H-index in the TAN area. Our analysis prefigures the future trajectories: TAN heterogeneity, neutrophil extracellular trap, the crosstalk between TANs and immunocytes, and immunotherapy will likely be the focus of future research.
A comprehensive bibliometric and visual analysis is first performed to map the current landscape and intellectual structure of TAN, which proffers fresh perspectives for further research. The accurate identification of distinct TAN subpopulations and the precise targeting of key pro-tumor/anti-tumor subpopulations hold immense potential to develop into a TAN-targeted immunotherapy.

Global research trends and focus on the link between neutrophil extracellular traps and tumor: a bibliometric and visualization analysis from 2006 to 2024.
Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have long been consistently considered an innate immune defense against foreign pathogens, but this oversimplified view has decelerated the progression of perceiving NET biology in chronic diseases. It is now increasingly accepted that NETs are not exclusive to anti-infection responses, but are also central players with a double-edged sword role in cancer progression. NETs have gradually emerged as tumor diagnostic, predictive, and prognostic biomarkers, and strenuous endeavors have been devoted to tapping their potential as new therapeutic targets. Correspondingly, the boom in studies on NETs and tumors in recent years has achieved a series of scientific outputs, which opens up a new perspective for perceiving the sophisticated landscapes of the tumor immune microenvironment. However, there is still much room to translate NET-targeted immunotherapies into clinical practice. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the knowledge structure and latent hotspots of the links between NETs and tumors using bibliometric analysis.
NETs and tumor publications from 2006 to 2024 were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis and visualization were conducted using Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R-bibliometrix.
The analysis included 1,339 publications authored by 7,747 scholars affiliated with 1,926 institutions across 70 countries/regions with relevant articles published in 538 journals. Despite China's maximum number of publications, the United States has continued to dominate the field as a global cooperation center with overwhelming citation counts. Frontiers in Immunology published the most number of publications, whereas Blood was the most cited journal. Wagner, Denisa D. and Kaplan, Mariana J. are concurrently in both the top 10 most prolific authors and cited author lists. Tumor microenvironment and immunotherapy will likely be the focus of future research.
A comprehensive bibliometric analysis was first conducted to map the current landscape and knowledge structure of the link between NETs and tumors in the hope of providing guidance and fresh perspectives for further research in this field. NETs are promising antitumor targets, and perhaps the eventual destination in the realm is to translate NET-targeted immunotherapies into clinical practice.

Current perspectives and trends of CD39-CD73-eAdo/A2aR research in tumor microenvironment: a bibliometric analysis.
Extracellular adenosine (eAdo) bridges tumor metabolism and immune regulation. CD39-CD73-eAdo/A2aR axis regulates tumor microenvironment (TME) and immunotherapy response. In the era of immunotherapy, exploring the impact of the CD39-CD73-eAdo/A2aR axis on TME and developing targeted therapeutic drugs to enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy are the current research hotspots. This study summarizes and explores the research trends and hotspots of the adenosine axis in the field of TME to provide ideas for further in-depth research.
Literature information was obtained from the Web of Science core collection database. The VOS viewer and the bibliometric tool based on R were used to quantify and identify cooperation information and individual influence by analyzing the detailed information of the global annual publication volume, country/region and institution distribution, article authors and co-cited authors, and journal distribution of these articles. At the same time, the distribution of author keywords and the co-occurrence of author keywords, highly cited articles, and highly co-cited references of CD39-CD73-eAdo/A2aR in the field of TME were analyzed to determine research hotspots and trends.
1,721 articles published in the past ten years were included in this study. Through bibliometric analysis, we found that (1) 69 countries and regions explored the effect of the CD39-CD73-eAdo/A2aR on TME, and the research was generally on the rise. Researchers in the United States dominated research in this area, with the highest total citation rate. China had the most significant number of publications. (2) Harvard University has published the most articles in this field. (3) 12,065 authors contributed to the publication of papers in this field, of which 23 published at least eight papers. STAGG J had significant academic influence, with 24 published articles and 2,776 citations. Co-cited authors can be clustered into three categories. Stagg J, Allard B, Ohta A, and Antonioli, L occupied a central position in the network. (4) 579 scholarly journals have published articles in this field. The journal FRONTIERS IN IMMUNOLOGY published the most significant number of papers, with 97 articles and a total of 2,317 citations, and the number of publications increased year by year. (5) "The ectonucleotidases CD39 and CD73: Novel checkpoint inhibitor targets" was the most frequently local cited article (163 times). The "A2A adenosine receptor protects tumors from antitumor T cells" was the most co-cited reference (224 times). (6) Through the analysis of author keywords, we found that the relationship between adenosine and immunotherapy was a core concept for many researchers in this field. Breast cancer, melanoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, glioblastoma, pancreatic cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and lung cancer were the most frequent cancer types in adenosine-related tumor studies. Immunotherapy, immunosuppression, immune checkpoint, and immune checkpoint inhibitors were the hot keywords in the research, reflecting the importance of the adenosine metabolic pathway in tumor immunotherapy. The keywords such as Immunogenic cell death, T cells, Sting, regulatory T cells, innate immunity, and immune infiltration demonstrated the pathways by which adenosine affected the TME. The famous author keywords in recent years have been immunotherapy, immunogenic cell death, inflammation, lung cancer, and gastric cancer.
The effect of CD39-CD73-eAdo/A2aR on the infiltration and function of various immune cells in TME, tumor immunotherapy response, and patient prognosis has attracted the attention of researchers from many countries/regions. American scholars still dominate the research in this field, but Chinese scholars produce the most research results. The journal FRONTIERS IN IMMUNOLOGY has published the wealthiest research in the field. Stagg J was a highly influential researcher in this field. Further exploration of targeted inhibition of CD39-CD73-eAdo/A2aR alone or in combination with other immunotherapy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy in treating various cancer types and developing effective clinical therapeutic drugs are continuous research hotspots in this field.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Metabolic Reprogramming in the Tumor Microenvironment From 2003 to 2022.
Despite considerable progress in cancer immunotherapy, it is not available for many patients. Resistance to immune checkpoint blockers arises from the intricate interactions between cancer and its microenvironment. Metabolic reprogramming in tumor and immune cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) influences anti-tumor immune responses by remodeling the immune microenvironment. Metabolic reprogramming has emerged as an important hallmark of tumorigenesis. However, few studies have focused on the TME and metabolic reprogramming. Therefore, we aimed to explore the current research status and popular topics in TME-related metabolic reprogramming over a 20 years using a bibliometric approach.
Studies focusing on metabolic reprogramming and TME were searched using the Web of Science Core Collection database. Bibliometric and visual analyses of the articles and reviews were performed using Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace.
In total, 4726 articles published between 2003 and 2022 were selected. The number of publications and citations has increased annually. Cooperation network analysis indicated that the United States holds the foremost position in metabolic reprogramming and TME research with the highest volume of publications and citations, thus exerting the greatest influence. Among these institutions, Fudan University displayed the highest level of productivity. Frontiers in Immunology showed the highest degree of productivity in this field. Ho Ping-Chih made the most article contributions, and Pearce Edward J. was the most co-cited author. Four clusters were obtained after a cluster analysis of the authors' keywords: TME, metabolic reprogramming, immunometabolism, and immunity. Immunometabolism, glycolysis, immune cells, and tumor-associated macrophages are relatively recent keywords that have attracted increasing attention.
A comprehensive landscape of advancements in metabolic reprogramming and the TME was evaluated, which provided crucial information for scholars to further advance this promising field. Further research should explore new topics related to immunometabolism in the TME using a transdisciplinary approach.
