IUBMB Trainee Initiative: supporting emerging biochemists and molecular biologists around the world.

The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) Trainee Initiative aims to identify challenges experienced by biochemistry and molecular biology trainees and create programming to foster their growth and development as the next generation of scientists. Here, we highlight resources and events developed by the Trainee Initiative in their endeavor to support trainees around the world.

Insights from the new horizons in biochemistry and molecular biology education conference. September 6-8, 2017, Rehovot, Israel.

The New Horizons in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education Conference was organized by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) in collaboration with the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), and the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel) and held in Rehovot, Israel, on September 6-8, 2017. The program covered the entire lifespan of students/scientists from the school level to undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral levels and brought together 130 international participants. This article provides an overview of the major issues and topics discussed at the conference and suggestions for the way forward.

IUBMB updates Ph.D. standards.

The Education Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry (IUB, but IUBMB since 1991) published its report on "Standards for the Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology" in 1989. Developments since then have led to the disappearance of the traditional demarcations between many of the biological disciplines, while information technology and bioinformatics have revolutionized the analysis, storage, and communication of scientific data. To meet these challenges, that report has now been revised through a broad interdisciplinary and international consultation. This has led to the recent publication, on behalf of the same Committee, of "Standards for the PhD Degree in the Molecular Biosciences". Like its predecessor this revised report not only defines in behavioural terms the qualities and skills expected of doctoral graduates by the international community of molecular bioscientists but also offers useful suggestions and advice as to how those skills can be developed and maximized. In addition, it discusses various topics related to doctoral education.

Harnessing interdisciplinary education in biochemistry and molecular biology: A report on the IUBMB/PSBMB 2019 "harnessing interdisciplinary education in biochemistry and molecular biology" conference.

The "Harnessing Interdisciplinary Education in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology" education conference was held on November 13-15, 2019 in Manila, Philippines. The conference was sponsored by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular (IUBMB). With over 400 attendees from 22 countries themes discussed by the speakers and enthusiastic participants ranged from teaching biochemistry and molecular biology at all levels and to students in a range of disciplines.
