Understanding AI in Healthcare: Perspectives of Future Healthcare Professionals.

Introduction The current medical curriculum lacks comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI)-focused training, potentially impacting future healthcare delivery. This study addresses the critical gap in AI training within medical education, particularly in India, by assessing medical students' awareness, perceptions, readiness, confidence, and ethical considerations regarding AI in healthcare. Our findings underscore the necessity of integrating AI competencies into medical education to prepare future healthcare professionals for an AI-driven landscape. Method After obtaining ethics approval, we conducted a cross-sectional study on Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students from the 2019-2023 batch. An exploratory survey using a validated questionnaire was employed to obtain medical students' current understanding and awareness of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, perceptions, readiness, confidence, and ethical considerations in utilizing AI technologies in clinical practice. Results The survey received 217 responses from 2019-2023 MBBS students. We found a mean percentage of awareness score of 44.74%, a mean percentage perception score of 68.96%, a mean percentage readiness score of 91.32%, a mean percentage confidence score of 58.48%, and a mean percentage ethics importance score of 69.27%. Males had higher awareness, confidence, and readiness scores. Conversely, females scored slightly higher in perception and the importance of ethics consideration, although not statistically significant. Junior batches outperform senior batches in perception, confidence, and readiness scores; in contrast, the awareness and ethics importance scores do not show significant differences between the two groups. Conclusion Our study indicates a generally positive outlook toward AI's potential to enhance healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. The study suggests a strong inclination toward further education and practical training focused on AI in healthcare, considering a solid recognition of the significance of ethical implications related to AI in healthcare. These findings highlight the importance of fostering AI literacy within medical education curricula and underscore the necessity for ongoing evaluation and adaptation to ensure that future healthcare professionals are equipped to navigate the complexities of AI in healthcare delivery while upholding ethical standards.

Artificial intelligence in medical education - perception among medical students.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes pervasive in healthcare, including applications like robotic surgery and image analysis, the World Medical Association emphasises integrating AI education into medical curricula. This study evaluates medical students' perceptions of 'AI in medicine', their preferences for AI training in education, and their grasp of AI's ethical implications in healthcare. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 325 medical students in Kerala using a pre-validated, semi structured questionnaire. The survey collected demographic data, any past educational experience about AI, participants' self-evaluation of their knowledge and evaluated self-perceived understanding of applications of AI in medicine. Participants responded to twelve Likert-scale questions targeting perceptions and ethical aspects and their opinions on suggested topics on AI to be included in their curriculum. AI was viewed as an assistive technology for reducing medical errors by 57.2% students and 54.2% believed AI could enhance medical decision accuracy. About 49% agreed that AI could potentially improve accessibility to healthcare. Concerns about AI replacing physicians were reported by 37.6% and 69.2% feared a reduction in the humanistic aspect of medicine. Students were worried about challenges to trust (52.9%), patient-physician relationships (54.5%) and breach of professional confidentiality (53.5%). Only 3.7% felttotally competent in informing patients about features and risks associated with AI applications. Strong demand for structured AI training was expressed, particularly on reducing medical errors (76.9%) and ethical issues (79.4%). This study highlights medical students' demand for structured AI training in undergraduate curricula, emphasising its importance in addressing evolving healthcare needs and ethical considerations. Despite widespread ethical concerns, the majority perceive AI as an assistive technology in healthcare. These findings provide valuable insights for curriculum development and defining learning outcomes in AI education for medical students.

Evaluating the readiness of healthcare administration students to utilize AI for sustainable leadership: a survey study.

This paper explores how healthcare administration students perceive the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare leadership, mainly focusing on the sustainability aspects involved. It aims to identify gaps in current educational curricula and suggests enhancements to better prepare future healthcare professionals for the evolving demands of AI-driven healthcare environments. This study utilized a cross-sectional survey design to understand healthcare administration students' perceptions regarding integrating AI in healthcare leadership. An online questionnaire, developed from an extensive literature review covering fundamental AI knowledge and its role in sustainable leadership, was distributed to students majoring and minoring in healthcare administration. This methodological approach garnered participation from 62 students, providing insights and perspectives crucial for the study's objectives. The research revealed that while a significant majority of healthcare administration students (70%) recognize the potential of AI in fostering sustainable leadership in healthcare, only 30% feel adequately prepared to work in AI-integrated environments. Additionally, students were interested in learning more about AI applications in healthcare and the role of AI in sustainable leadership, underscoring the need for comprehensive AI-focused education in their curriculum. The research is limited by its focus on a single academic institution, which may not fully represent the diversity of perspectives in healthcare administration. This study highlights the need for healthcare administration curricula to incorporate AI education, aligning theoretical knowledge with practical applications, to effectively prepare future professionals for the evolving demands of AI-integrated healthcare environments. This research paper presents insights into healthcare administration students' readiness and perspectives toward AI integration in healthcare leadership, filling a critical gap in understanding the educational needs in the evolving landscape of AI-driven healthcare.

Readiness, knowledge, and perception towards artificial intelligence of medical students at faculty of medicine, Pelita Harapan University, Indonesia: a cross sectional study.

Artificial intelligence (AI) enables machines to perform many complicated human skills which require various levels of human intelligence. In the field of medicine, AI helps physicians in making diagnoses and treatments for patients with more efficiency, accuracy, and precision. In order to prepare medical students who are the future healthcare workforce, it is important to enhance their readiness, knowledge and perception toward AI. This study aims to assess Pelita Harapan University (PHU) medical students' readiness, knowledge, and perception toward AI. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted to assess respondents' readiness, knowledge and perception toward AI. An online questionnaire was distributed via Google Forms to all batch of medical students. Medical Artificial Intelligence Readiness Scale for Medical Students (MAIRS-MS) questionnaire was used to evaluate AI readiness, while an adapted questionnaires was used to evaluate knowledge and perception toward AI. Data were then analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. A total of 650 respondents were included in this study. Most respondents were in pre-clinical phase (88%) while the remaining were in clinical phase (12%). Overall, the total mean score for AI readiness was 73.34 of 100. Respondents had a mean score 24.52 ± 5.26 of 40, 27.78 ± 4.65 of 40, 10.57 ± 2.07 of 15, and 10.47 ± 2.00 of 15 in the cognitive, ability, vision, and ethics domain respectively. Generally, respondents had sufficient knowledge and positive perception toward AI. There were also significant correlation between readiness and knowledge with gender, having studied coding previously in high school, and having family or close friends working in AI field. Social media also had a good influence on enchancing readiness in the domain of ability and ethics, and perception towards AI. Medical students of PHU mostly showed neutral to favorable response on readiness, knowledge, and perception towards AI. Incorporating AI into high school and medical curriculum is an important step to prepare medical students' encounter and partnership with AI as the future workforce in medicine.

Shaping the future: perspectives on the Integration of Artificial Intelligence in health profession education: a multi-country survey.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming health profession education (HPE) through personalized learning technologies. HPE students must also learn about AI to understand its impact on healthcare delivery. We examined HPE students' AI-related knowledge and attitudes, and perceived challenges in integrating AI in HPE. This cross-sectional included medical, nursing, physiotherapy, and clinical nutrition students from four public universities in Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Egypt. Data were collected between February and October 2023 via an online survey that covered five main domains: benefits of AI in healthcare, negative impact on patient trust, negative impact on the future of healthcare professionals, inclusion of AI in HPE curricula, and challenges hindering integration of AI in HPE. Of 642 participants, 66.4% reported low AI knowledge levels. The UAE had the largest proportion of students with low knowledge (72.7%). The majority (54.4%) of participants had learned about AI outside their curriculum, mainly through social media (66%). Overall, 51.2% expressed positive attitudes toward AI, with Egypt showing the largest proportion of positive attitudes (59.1%). Although most participants viewed AI in healthcare positively (91%), significant variations were observed in other domains. The majority (77.6%) supported integrating AI in HPE, especially in Egypt (82.3%). A perceived negative impact of AI on patient trust was expressed by 43.5% of participants, particularly in Egypt (54.7%). Only 18.1% of participants were concerned about the impact of AI on future healthcare professionals, with the largest proportion from Egypt (33.0%). Some participants (34.4%) perceived AI integration as challenging, notably in the UAE (47.6%). Common barriers included lack of expert training (53%), awareness (50%), and interest in AI (41%). This study clarified key considerations when integrating AI in HPE. Enhancing students' awareness and fostering innovation in an AI-driven medical landscape are crucial for effectively incorporating AI in HPE curricula.
