Dual trajectories of depression and social participation among Chinese older adults.

This study aimed to investigate the dual trajectories of social participation (SP) and depression among older adults, and explore common factors that may influence both trajectories. The study utilized data from four waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2011 to 2018). The dual-trajectory model was employed to estimate the dual trajectories of SP and depression. This study identified two SP and three depression trajectories. The results revealed that the reciprocal relationship between SP and depression trajectories is confirmed in all sub-groups of the dual trajectories. Our study identified six distinct sub-groups of individuals based on their SP and depression trajectories and some commen risk factors of SP and depression trajectories. Related intervention policies should consider the dual trajectories of SP and depression and focus on subgroups with high vulnerability, such as high depression but low SP. Additionally, attention should be given to addressing the common risk factors that underlie these trajectories.

Dual trajectories of social participation and frailty in Chinese older adults: a longitudinal study based on CLHLS from 2008 to 2018.

This study aimed to identify the dual trajectories of social participation (SP) and frailty index (FI) among Chinese older adults, and investigate common influential factors of both trajectories. Utilizing data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) 2008-2018 surveys, 1,645 individuals were analyzed. A group-based dual trajectory model and logistic regression were used to examine trajectories, their interrelations and shared influencing factors. This study identified three SP, two FI trajectories and six distinct sub-groups of individuals. The study confirmed a long-term, interrelated relationship between two outcomes and identified some common factors. Compared to participants in the lower SP trajectory, those who followed the middle SP trajectory and higher SP trajectory had increased probabilities of belonging to the slow-growth FI trajectory (90.28 and 99.71%, respectively). And the participants in the slow-growth FI exhibited higher probabilities of belonging to the middle SP and the higher SP trajectory (37.64 and 25.34% higher, respectively) compared with those in the rapid-growth FI trajectory. Age, marital status, and drinking status were mutual factors associated with the dual trajectories. The results showed significant associations between higher levels of frailty and lower levels of social participation. Related intervention policies should consider the dual trajectories and the common factors that underlie these trajectories of SP and FI.

Associations between trajectories of social participation and functional ability among older adults: Results from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

Functional ability (FA) and social participation (SP) are important indicators of healthy aging, both their trajectories are heterogeneous. It is little known about how the SP trajectories affects FA trajectories. FA was assessed by 20 items covering the ability of meeting basic needs and mobility. SP was assessed by frequency of participating in 10 social activities. Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) was used to identify the trajectories of FA and SP of the participants. Two FA trajectories were identified: low baseline-decline tendency (16.1%) and high baseline-stable tendency (83.9%) trajectories. Two SP trajectories were also identified: low baseline-stable tendency (58.5%) and high baseline-increase tendency (41.5%) trajectories. After controlling for the potential covariates, participants among the high baseline-increase tendency SP trajectory group also had significantly higher odds ratios to be belonged in high baseline-stable tendency FA trajectory group (ORs = 2.64, 95%CI = 1.98-3.05). High-increasing social participation had a protective effect to maintain high baseline-stable tendency functional ability among older adults. These findings suggest social participation appears to have great benefits on promoting healthy aging in China.

Distinct depressive symptom trajectories are associated with incident diabetes among Chinese middle-aged and older adults: The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

Previous studies have reported that depression and depressive symptom are associated with diabetes incident. However, the association between long-term depressive symptom patterns and risk of diabetes remains unknown. The aim of present study was to evaluate the association between depressive symptom trajectories and risk of diabetes. We used data of 8806 participants (≥45 years old) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Trajectories of depressive symptom were identified by latent mixture modeling. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to examine the association of depressive symptom trajectories with diabetes. Five depressive symptom trajectories were identified, characterizing by maintaining a low CES-D scores throughout the follow-up (low-stable; 3227 participants [36.65%]); maintaining a moderate CES-D scores throughout the follow-up (moderate-stable; 3402 participants [38.63%]); moderate starting CES-D scores then increasing scores (moderate-increasing; 681 participants [7.73%%]); high starting CES-D scores but then decreasing scores (high-decreasing; 1061 participants [12.05%]); and maintained high CES-D scores throughout the follow-up (high-stable; 435 participants [4.94%]). During 2015 to 2018 (Wave 3 to Wave 4), a total of 312 respondents experienced diabetes. Compared with participants in the low-stable depressive symptom trajectory, those following a high-decreasing (ORs = 2.04; 95%CIs 1.48-2.98) and high-stable depressive symptom trajectories (ORs = 3.26; 95%CIs 2.06-5.16) were at substantially higher risk of developing diabetes. Individuals with high-decreasing and high-stable depressive symptom trajectories over time were associated with increased risk of incident diabetes. Long-term depressive symptom may be a strong predictor of having diabetes.

Association of social integration with cognitive function trajectories among Chinese older adults: evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study (CHARLS).

The prevalence of cognitive impairment among older adults remains high. It has been proven that social integration is related to cognitive function. However, limited research has examined the association of social integration and its different dimensions with cognitive function trajectories of older adults. The data were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) spanning 2013 (T1) to 2018 (T3). A total of 3,977 older adults were included in the final analysis. Cognitive function was measured with items from an adapted Chinese version of the Mini-Mini-Mental Mental State Examination (MMSE), while the measurement of social integration included three dimensions: economic integration, relational integration and community integration. A group-based trajectory model (GBTM) was used to identify cognitive trajectory groups among participants and an unordered multinomial logistic regression was employed to explore the association of baseline social integration and its three dimensions with cognitive function trajectories. Three cognitive function trajectory groups were identified: low-decline group (24.1%), medium-decline group (44.2%) and high-stable group (31.7%). Comparing to the medium-decline trajectory group, older adults with higher social integration scores were more likely to be in the high-stable trajectory group (OR = 1.087, 95%CI: 1.007 ~ 1.174), while less likely to be in the low-decline group (OR = 0.806, 95%CI: 0.736 ~ 0.882). Among the different dimensions of social integration, older adults with higher community integration scores were more likely to be in the high-stable trajectory group (OR = 1.222, 95%CI: 1.026 ~ 1.456); Older adults with higher relational integration scores were less likely to be in the low-decline trajectory group (OR = 0.816, 95%CI: 0.734 ~ 0.906). The economic integration was not found to correlate with the cognitive function trajectories. Stratified analyses revealed that the association between community integration and cognitive trajectories was only significant among older adults aged 60 to 69, and the association between relational integration and cognitive trajectories was only significant among older adults who was agricultural household registration. The developmental trajectories of cognitive function among Chinese older adults are heterogeneous. Social integration is significantly related to the trajectories of cognitive function in Chinese older adults. Measures should be taken to promote social integration of Chinese older adults to reduce the decline of cognitive function.
