Disruptive innovation in psychiatry.

Disruptive innovation is a cornerstone of various disciplines, particularly in the business world, where paradigm-altering approaches are often lauded. As a construct, disruptive psychiatry can be considered to embody such an approach by the pursuit of innovations within the field which test boundaries and shake up the status quo. Given the importance of addressing the current mental health pandemic, and the deficit of highly effective pharmacological treatments for various conditions, innovative disruptive thinking is required. Significant promise exists via the provision of potentially more effective innovative therapeutic options, including digital interventions, psychedelic medicines, microbiome-altering treatments, brain stimulation technology, and nanotechnology-based delivery systems. These approaches may be further advanced by individualization of the treatments using computational technology (including quantum computing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence) and genomics.

Quantum computing: a new paradigm for ecology.

A global technology arms race is underway to build evermore powerful and precise quantum computers. Quantum computers have the potential to tackle certain quantitative problems quicker than classical computers. The current focus of quantum computing is on pushing the boundaries of fundamental quantum information and commercial applications in industrial sectors, financial services, and other profit-led sectors, particularly where improvements in optimisation and sampling can improve increased economic return. We believe that ecologists could exploit the computational power of quantum computers because the statistical approaches commonly used in ecology already have proven pathways on quantum computers. Moreover, quantum computing could ultimately leapfrog our understanding of complex ecological systems, if the hardware, opportunity, and creativity of quantitative ecologists all align.

Quantum computing for near-term applications in generative chemistry and drug discovery.

In recent years, drug discovery and life sciences have been revolutionized with machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) methods. Quantum computing is touted to be the next most significant leap in technology; one of the main early practical applications for quantum computing solutions is predicted to be in quantum chemistry simulations. Here, we review the near-term applications of quantum computing and their advantages for generative chemistry and highlight the challenges that can be addressed with noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. We also discuss the possible integration of generative systems running on quantum computers into established generative AI platforms.
