Psychometric properties of the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS-MP).

This study aimed to validate the Persian version of Maslach Burnout Inventory for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS-MP), an instrument developed to capture burnout for health professionals. The specific aims were to psychometrically assess the Persian MBI-HSS-MP in relation to its structure, test-retest reliability, and item properties. The study setting was all eight hospitals in Qazvin province, Iran (study period from 10 September to 16 November 2020). Health professionals of physicians (n = 106) and nurses (n = 200) participated in the study. The psychometric properties of the 22-item MBI-HSS-MP was then examined for its factor structure via confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch models, test-retest reliability, item fit, and differential item functioning (DIF). The MBI-HSS-MP was verified as having a three-factor structure and each item was embedded well in its belonging construct (comparative fit index = 0.941, Tucker-Lewis index = 0.929 derived from CFA results; infit and outfit MnSq = 0.71 to 1.38 derived from Rasch models). Test-retest reliability of each MBI-HSS-MP item was satisfactory and no substantial DIF items were displayed across gender or across health professionals. The MBI-HSS-MP has good psychometric properties to assess burnout accurately among healthcare professionals in the three dimensions of emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization.

Psychometric properties of the arabic version of the maslach burnout inventory-human services survey (MBI-HSS) among lebanese dentists.

Dentists are at risk of burnout syndrome, which can have negative impacts on their work environment and productivity. Assessing burnout is crucial for maintaining the well-being and effectiveness of dentists in their profession. The present study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) among dentists. The original English version of the MBI-HSS was translated into Arabic, and then back-translated into English by experienced bilingual professionals. Lebanese dentists were asked to participate in the study between February and June 2019. Data collected included demographic information and items from the Arabic version of the MBI-HSS. A total of 441 people participated in the study, of whom 58.3% were men. The mean age of the sample was 39.6 years (SD = 12.8), with a range of 23 to 68 years old. Approximately 60% of dentists were specialists. Cronbach's alphas were as follows: emotional exhaustion (alpha = 0.855), depersonalization (alpha = 0.823), and personal achievement (alpha = 0.667). The results of the test-retest reliability assessment demonstrated the strong reproducibility of the MBI-HSS [EE, ICC = 0.927 (0.845, 0.966), p-value < 0.0001; PA, ICC = 0.963 (0.921-0.983), p-value < 0.001; DP, ICC = 0.764 (0.497-0.889), p-value < 0.0001]. The exploratory factor analysis of the MBI-HSS yielded three psychometrically robust sub-domains representing dimensions of "emotional exhaustion," "depersonalization," and "personal achievement," which explained 57.8% of the scale's total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the 15-item model (excluding items 4, 5, 12, 13, 16, 20, and 22) was the most fitting for the data. The Arabic version of the MBI-HSS scale demonstrated good psychometric properties in Lebanese dentists. However, it would be important to conduct further research to confirm its reliability and validity in other Arab countries.

Reassessing the most popularly suggested measurement models and measurement invariance of the Maslach Burnout Inventory - human service survey among Vietnamese healthcare professionals.

Despite its popularity, Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey (MBI-HSS)'s factorial structure has been subject to considerable debate, and its measurement invariance (MI) is seldomly examined. This cross-sectional study aims at reassessing the most popularly suggested structures of this instrument, namely the 20- and 22-item three-factor model on Vietnamese healthcare professionals. It also examines the MI of MBI-HSS across genders, occupations, and mental health conditions. Self-administered questionnaires were sent out to 1500 doctors and nurses working at 15 hospitals in big cities in Vietnam in September and October 2020, and 1162 valid questionnaires were collected. The questionnaire consists of three sets of questions covering (1) demographic information of participants; (2) MBI-HSS questionnaire; and (3) The 21-item version of the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale. MBI-HSS scale was validated on Vietnamese sample for the first time; therefore, we used the repeated forward-backward procedure to translate this scale into Vietnamese. To examine which model best fits the data, a series of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to test the model fit of correlated three-factor model, second-order hierarchical model, and bi-factor model. The reliability of the MBI-HSS was assessed using Cronbach's α coefficients. Then, multiple-group CFA (MGCFA) was applied to determine whether the MBI-HSS has a similar structure between groups different in gender, occupation, and mental health condition. Our findings confirmed that the 22-item MBI-HSS best fit the data, and this scale measures three distinct but related aspects of burnout, including Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. The MI of MBI-HSS across genders and occupations was also confirmed. However, data did not fit well with group at risk for common mental health disorders. It can be concluded that the Vietnamese version of MBI-HSS is a valid measure to assess burnout level of healthcare professionals in Vietnam who are not at risk for mental health disorders.

Burnout study during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand: psychometric evaluation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel.

This study aimed (1) to determine the psychometric properties of a Thai version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS [MP]) and (2) to examine the mean scores of burnout and associated factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Forward and back translations of the MBI-HSS (MP) questionnaire were performed. The Thai version was subsequently completed by 682 Thai physicians and nurses who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic. Exploratory factor analysis was performed on the first subsample (n = 341) by conducting Kaiser Mayer-Olkin sampling adequacy measurement and Bartlett's test of sphericity whereas confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed on the second subsample (n = 341) using fit indices of the normed chi-square (χ2/df), the comparative fit index, the Tucker-Lewis index, and the root mean square error of approximation. This version's internal consistency was investigated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Demographic profiles were evaluated with descriptive and analytical statistics. The Thai version of the MBI-HSS (MP) displayed good psychometric characteristics, as the Cronbach's alpha values of the 3 burnout factors ranged from 0.843 to 0.945. The CFA also showed good fit indices (χ2/df = 4.473; P < 0.001; RMSEA = 0.075 (95%CI = 0.055-0.079); CFI = 0.946; and TLI = 0.936). The physicians' mean EE, DP, and PA scores were 25.28 ± 13.27, 7.15 ± 6.11, and 36.83 ± 8.13, respectively, whereas The nurses' mean EE, DP, and PA scores were 23.10 ± 14.14, 4.43 ± 5.06, and 35.67 ± 10.24, respectively. Healthcare professionals who were younger, single, had fewer years of practice, and had more working hours per week tended to express more burnout scores. The Thai version of the MBI-HSS (MP) demonstrates good psychometric properties in assessing burnout among healthcare professionals. Several factors may be pivotal in intensifying burnout.

Comparative Analysis of Radiology Trainee Burnout Using the Maslach Burnout Inventory and Oldenburg Burnout Inventory.

Burnout is an individualized response to imbalances between job demands and resources that has predominantly been evaluated with the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). There are other instruments not validated among healthcare providers that may be comparable to the MBI. Utilizing alternative measurements can allow researchers to assess wellness with a larger array of questions. We explored differences between the MBI- Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS [MP]) and Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) in evaluating emotional exhaustion (EE)/exhaustion and depersonalization (DP)/disengagement. We administered the MBI-HSS (MP) and OLBI to United States (US) radiology trainees during three,1-month intervals in April 2018, October 2018, and April 2019. Student's T-tests or ANOVA was used to evaluate differences between demographic groups and burnout scores in the MBI-HSS (MP) and OBLI. Non-inferiority analysis was completed to evaluate if the OBLI was not inferior to the MBI-HSS (MP) in how its subscales measure exhaustion and disengagement. The MBI-HSS (MP) subtotals for EE and DP were compared with the OLBI scores for exhaustion and disengagement using two-tailed paired T-tests for each trainee. Of 2823 trainees emailed, 770 (27.3%) responded. The mean EE Maslach score was 21/54, and the mean DP Maslach score was 8/30. The average OBLI exhaustion and disengagement score was 2.38 and 2.22, respectively. Comparative analysis of completed MBI-HSS (MP) and OLBI subscales yielded no significant difference between the EE/exhaustion (t(496)=1.038; p=0.30) or DP/disengagement (t(498)=0.084; p=0.933) subscales. Our national study of radiology trainees demonstrated that the OLBI was not inferior in assessing exhaustion and disengagement to the EE and DP subscales of the MBI-HSS (MP).
