A Phenomenological Study of Nurse Managers' and Assistant Nurse Managers' Experiences during the COVID-19 Pandemic in the United States.

To understand the experiences of hospital nurse managers and assistant nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Little research has been published about the experiences of nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Experiences of front-line nurses have been well documented. This is the first phenomenological study to date in the United States on experiences of hospital nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Phenomenological qualitative approach. Thirteen managers, seven nurse managers and six assistant nurse managers were interviewed about their experiences using audio-video teleconferencing and a semi-structured interview guide. Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research criteria for reporting qualitative research were used. The four major themes that emerged were as follows: being there for everyone; leadership challenges; struggles, support and coping; and strengthening my role. There were 11 subthemes. A major focus of nurse managers during the pandemic was psychosocial support of front-line nurses while at the same time experiencing stress and exhaustion themselves. More attention on the psychosocial needs of nurse managers, interventions to allay their exhaustion and provisions for readily available support are warranted.

Nurse managers' experience during the COVID-19 pandemic in China: A qualitative study.

The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of female new nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a phenomenological study, and qualitative descriptive analysis was used. New nurse managers were defined as new nurse managers with less than 3 years of management experience in this study. During November and December of 2021, 18 female new nurse managers were interviewed face-to-face with a semi-structured interview guide in three municipal hospitals. The study followed the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) guidelines for evaluating qualitative research reports. Data analysis was performed using Colaizzi's seven-step method. Four main themes and 10 sub-themes were extracted from the collected data. The four major themes were as follows: (1) a shift in stress; (2) work-related physical and psychological discomfort; (3) reflection on the cause; (4) coping and struggles. New nurse managers were experiencing great stress and exhaustion in their roles. It is important that they are helped to handle situations. Providing them with readily accessible support, addressing their psychosocial needs and addressing exhaustion is necessary. Considering their short management time, the hospital should provide adequate support in human, financial and material areas and provide training to help new nurse managers better adapt to their new roles. In addition, nurse directors should create a culture of mutual respect, identify workplace bullying and create a harmonious and cooperation-oriented work environment for new nurse managers. 'The office of disaster management' nurse managers' experiences during COVID-19: A qualitative interview study using thematic analysis.

The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a growing body of knowledge about the experiences of clinical nurses during COVID-19. However, there is less evidence about the experiences of nurse managers during the pandemic. Eight nurse managers, from acute care and outpatient settings, completed semistructured interviews about how their roles had changed during the pandemic, how they felt about these changes, and what had gone well or been difficult. Each participant was interviewed once, for 20-60 min. We used thematic analysis methods to analyse the interview transcripts. Nurse managers had to coordinate care in a context of uncertainty and guidance that changed frequently. Participants found that their roles and responsibilities either expanded to include more duties, or they were asked to take on a completely new role, with no orientation or training. Nurse managers were expected to provide support to their staff and patients, but did not necessarily receive support themselves. Participants were expected to plan simultaneously for care during the pandemic and for a return to normal working conditions. These factors contributed to challenging and difficult participant experiences of managing during COVID-19. Nurse managers' experiences during COVID-19 are influenced by changes to their roles and the support they received. Nurse managers continue to support high-quality care despite working a difficult context. Where possible, nurse managers can be supported to extend their roles or receive additional education and support if they are required to take on new responsibilities. Nurse managers require support in order to be a resource for their staff.

Experiences of frontline nurse managers during the COVID-19: A qualitative study.

To explore experiences of frontline nurse managers during COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic has complicated care provision and healthcare management around the world. Nurse managers have had to face the challenge of managing a crisis with precarious resources. Little research has been published about the experiences of nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative descriptive study of 10 frontline nurse managers at a highly specialized university hospital in Spain was carried out. Semi-structured interviews were conducted between June and September 2020. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist was used for reporting. Six themes emerged: constant adaptation to change, participation in decision-making, management of uncertainty, prioritization of the biopsychosocial well-being of the staff, preservation of humanized care and 'one for all'. This study provides evidence for the experiences of nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, analysing these experiences has helped identify some of the key competencies that these nurses must have to respond to a crisis and in their dual role as patient and nurse mediators. Knowing about the experiences of frontline nurse managers during the pandemic can facilitate planning and preparing nurse managers for future health disasters, including subsequent waves of COVID-19.

Nurse managers' challenges and opportunities in the COVID-19 pandemic crisis: A qualitative descriptive study.

The study was conducted to understand the experiences of nurse managers with regard to the difficulties and opportunities they encountered during the pandemic. Although many studies have been carried out to understand how nurses were affected in the COVID-19 pandemic, there are few studies that treat the experiences of nurse managers. In this qualitative descriptive study with 19 nurse managers working in pandemic management at a university hospital in Turkey during the first three waves of the pandemic, data were collected between April and July 2021 using the semi-structured interview method. Content analysis was performed to analyse the data. Six themes were identified with respect to the experiences of nurse managers during the pandemic. These themes were initial reactions to the crisis, ineffective crisis management, excessive workload, the moral burden in decision-making, support of colleagues and other multidisciplinary team and nurse manager empowerment. The nurse managers had difficulties in their managerial roles during the pandemic. However, they also viewed the crisis as an opportunity because they were able to note the deficiencies in management at all levels of the hospital and their leadership and decision-making roles took on more importance. Nurse managers may use the results of this study to be prepared for the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and any other emergency circumstances that they may have to face in the future.
