Nurses' Knowledge and Attitude toward Pediatric Pain Management: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Pain in infants and children is often poorly assessed and managed. Although there are many studies on this subject, none have been conducted in the Arab world, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where nurses are largely expatriates. To examine the knowledge and attitudes of nurses working with infants and children in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia regarding pain management. Descriptive cross-sectional survey. Five government hospitals in Riyadh region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Registered nurses caring for infants and children. A convenience sample of 410 nurses working at five Saudi Arabian government hospitals was surveyed using the Pediatric Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (PNKAS-Shriners Revision). Data were analyzed using descriptive (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics, including Pearson correlation, independent t test, and one-way analysis tests. Poor overall knowledge and attitudes regarding pediatric pain management was evident in this study. The mean correct score achieved by nurses was 18.1 ± 4.0 out of 40 or 45.2% ± 10.0% of a possible score of 100%. A weak but statistically significant correlation was found between years of pediatric nursing experience and total score (r = -0.129, p = .009). We concluded that intensive education on pediatric pain and its management is urgently needed for nurses working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Quantitative study of oncology nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards pain management in Saudi Arabian hospitals.

Pain is an unpleasant human experience, often associated with underlying medical conditions, and a key reason for individuals experiencing pain to seek medical advice. However, the pain experience is unique and subjective, and affects people's quality of life, as well as impacting on their concerned family members. Optimal pain management requires adequate knowledge, a positive attitude, and competent pain assessment measures. It has been reported that oncology nurses in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have inadequate knowledge, assessment skills and management of pain. This paper aims to examine nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding pain management in Saudi Arabian hospitals (SA). A cross-sectional survey was administered to 320 nurses exhibiting considerable racial, cultural, religious and professional diversity, working in oncology units at five hospitals in the KSA. Self-completed survey questionnaires were distributed using the 'Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain' (KASRP) tool. The nurses exhibited a relatively poor overall knowledge of pain management (mean score = 45.1%; 95% CI = 43.9%, 46.2%). The mean KASRP scores varied significantly at α = 0.05 with respect to the nurses' nationality, whether they had attended pain-related courses, and whether they had participated in research. The results indicate the urgency needed to reform pain management education for oncology nurses in the KSA.

Nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding pain management: Cross-sectional survey in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

This study aims to investigate the nursing staff's knowledge and attitudes regarding pain management in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional survey. Between January and March of 2020, 183 registered nurses from two hospitals in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia completed the Nurses' Knowledge and Attitude Survey Regarding Pain. We determined the average mean score for both the individual and the aggregate scores and the t-test. The nurses had an inadequate level of knowledge and attitudes regarding pain based on the average mean score for this factor. There was a statistically significant correlation between length of time spent working as a registered nurse and the nurses' reported scores on tests measuring their knowledge and attitude toward pain.

Nurses' knowledge and attitudes regarding pain in Saudi Arabia.

Unrelieved pain is a worldwide health care problem that can lead to unnecessary complications and increased health care expenditure. The aim of this study was to examine nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward pain in Saudi Arabia. A descriptive design was employed using the Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Survey regarding pain. The study took place in a tertiary teaching hospital in Saudi Arabia. All nurses employed in the hospital were eligible to participate. A total of 775 questionnaires were distributed to nurses working in acute care, intensive care, and nursing education and administration settings. In all, 593 respondents completed the questionnaires, representing a response rate of 76.5%. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Most participants were from overseas (97.5%), speaking 23 different languages; 36.5% of nurses held a bachelors of science degree in nursing or the equivalent. The mean score of correctly answered items in was 16.9 (95% confidence interval, 16.6-17.31) out of a total possible score of 40. Nurses demonstrated some misconceived attitudes such as not giving the required dose of morphine to a smiling patient despite the patient being in pain. It is of concern that the findings identified problems of inadequate knowledge and inappropriate attitudes regarding pain assessment and management in Saudi Arabia. Considering these problems, the development of pain programs and policies affecting national and international nurses is highly imperative.
