Possible egg positioning and gluing behavior by ovipositing southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae).

From March 2002 to January 2004, a colony of southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), was kept in the laboratory, and its oviposition behavior was observed. During oviposition, soon after the egg is expelled, the female touches the egg mass with the dorsal surface of the last tarsomere; this movement of one leg of the hind pair occurred once. This small component of the oviposition behavior of this pentatomid is little known and not yet fully understood; it may help to position and glue the newly deposited egg to the others.

Biomechanics of fore wing to hind wing coupling in the southern green stink bug Nezara viridula (Pentatomidae).

Stink bugs have wing coupling mechanisms to synchronize flapping of their wings. The wing coupling is performed through a clamp-like structure on the fore wing (i.e. hemelytron) and a rolled margin on the hind wing. Here we used modern imaging techniques to investigate structural characteristics and material composition of the wing coupling of the stink bug Nezara viridula. We found that the surfaces of the clamp-like structure and the rolled margin are covered by highly-sclerotized microtrichia, which are expected to reduce friction between the wings during flapping flight. Micro-force measurements showed that fore and hind wings can be coupled only in certain angles ranging from 40.6° to 267.7° The results further showed that the force required to uncouple fore and hind wings is maximal for a range of angles which they make with each other during flight (127.1°-238.9°). In contrast to previous observations on some other insect species, the removal of the wing coupling in stink bugs led to complete loss of flight ability. In summary, we concluded that the shape, material composition and orientation of the coupling structure guarantee a robust fore wing to hind wing coupling during flight and a fast, easy uncoupling at rest. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Although the coupling mechanism of insect fore wing and hind wing has long been described, the functionality of this mechanism still remains largely unknown. In the present work, using a combination of modern imaging techniques and mechanical testing, we studied the functional morphology of the fore wing-hind wing coupling mechanism of the stink bug Nezara viridula. Our study reveals the crucial role of the mechanism in the flight ability of the stink bug and sheds light on the structure-property-function relationships of the functional diptery in insects.

Demographic Parameters of Nezara viridula (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Reared on Two Diets Developed for Lygus spp.

Two artificial diets developed for rearing Lygus spp., a fresh yolk chicken egg based-diet (FYD) and a dry yolk chicken egg based-diet (DYD), were evaluated as an alternative food source for rearing the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae). Survival to adult was 97.3 and 74.67%, respectively, on the fresh and dry yolk diets. Insects fed FYD had 100% survival of nymphs from first through fourth instars. Adult development was significantly shorter on FYD (30.37 ± SE 0.30 d) as compared with DYD (32.77 ± SE 0.16 d). Increased male and female longevity, higher fecundity, and larger egg mass sizes were also observed with N. viridula-fed FYD. However, fertility and hatchability was higher on DYD. A complete cohort life table was constructed to describe the development of N. viridula on both diets.

Influence of corn on stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in subsequent crops.

In southeastern United States farmscapes, corn, Zea mays L., is often closely associated with peanut, (Arachis hypogaea L.), cotton, (Gossypium hirsutum L.), or both. The objective of this 3-yr on-farm study was to examine the influence of corn on stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), Nezara viridula (L.), and Euschistus servus (Say), in subsequent crops in these farmscapes. Adults of both stink bug species entered corn first, and seasonal occurrence of stink bug eggs, nymphs, and adults indicated that corn was a suitable host plant for adult survival and nymphal development to adults. Stink bug females generally oviposited on cotton or peanut near the interface, or common boundary, of the farmscape before senescence of corn, availability of a new food, or both. Adult stink bugs dispersed from crop to crop at the interface of a farmscape in response to senescence of corn, availability of new food, or both. In corn-cotton farmscapes, adult stink bugs dispersed from senescing corn into cotton to feed on bolls (fruit). In corn-peanut farmscapes, adult stink bugs dispersed from senescing corn into peanut, which apparently played a role in nymphal development in these farmscapes. In the corn-cotton-peanut farmscape, stink bug nymphs and adults dispersed from peanut into cotton in response to newly available food, not senescence of peanut. Stink bug dispersal into cotton resulted in severe boll damage. In conclusion, N. viridula and E. servus are generalist feeders that exhibit edge-mediated dispersal from corn into subsequent adjacent crops in corn-cotton, corn-peanut, and corn-peanut-cotton farmscapes to take advantage of suitable resources available in time and space for oviposition, nymphal development, and adult survival. Management strategies for crops in this region need to be designed to break the cycle of stink bug production, dispersal, and expansion by exploiting their edge-mediated movement and host plant preferences.

Development of a Method for Rearing Nezara viridula (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) on a Semi-solid Artificial Diet.

A method for rearing the southern green stinkbug, (Nezara viridula L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), using a modified lygus semi-solid artificial diet was developed. First to second-instar nymph were reared in a density of 631.5 ± 125.05 eggs per Petri-dish (4 cm deep × 15 cm diam). Second instar to adult were reared in a density of 535.0 ± 112.46 s instar nymphs per rearing cage (43 × 28 × 9 cm). Mating and oviposition occurred in popup rearing cages (30 × 30 cm), each holding 60-90 mixed sex adults of similar age. Adults emerged 35.88 ± 2.13 d after oviposition and survived for an average of 43.09 ± 9.53 d. On average, adults laid 223.95 ± 69.88 eggs in their lifetime, for a total production of 8,099 ± 1,277 fertile eggs/oviposition cage. Egg fertility was 77.93% ± 16.28. Egg masses held in petri-dishes had a total hatchability of 79.38% ± 20.03. Mortality of early nymphs in petri-dishes was 0.64% ± 0.12 for the first instar and 1.37% ± 0.45 for second instar. Late nymphal mortality in rearing cages was 1.41% ± 0.10, 3.47% ± 1.27, and 4.72% ± 1.29 for the third, fourth, and fifth instars, respectively. Survivorship from nymphs to adults was 88.48% ± 2.76. Using artificial diet for rearing N. viridula could reduce cost by avoiding time-consuming issues with daily feeding fresh natural hosts and insect manipulation. It could increase reliability and simplicity of bug production, which should facilitate mass rearing of its biological control agents.
