ISSN: 1476-0835.<br /><br />Psychology and Psychotherapy: Theory Research and Practice (formerly The British Journal of Medical Psychology) is an international journal with a focus on the psychological aspects of mental health, psychological problems and their psychotherapeutic treatments. Its aim has been to bring together the psychiatric and psychological disciplines and this is reflected in the composition of the Editorial Team. Nevertheless we welcome submissions from mental health professionals and researchers from all relevant professional backgrounds. The traditional orientation of the Journal has been towards psychodynamic and interpersonal approaches, which have defined its core identity, but we now additionally welcome submissions of original theoretical and research-based papers of any theoretical provenance provided they have a bearing upon vulnerability to, adjustment to, assessment of, and recovery (assisted or otherwise) from psychological disorders. The Journal thus aims to promote theoretical and research developments in the fields of subjective psychological states and dispositions, interpersonal attitudes, behaviour and relationships and psychological therapies (including both process and outcome research) where mental health is concerned. Submission of systematic reviews and other research reports which support evidence-based practice is also welcomed. Clinical or case studies will be considered only if they illustrate particularly unusual forms of psychopathology or innovative forms of therapy which carry important theoretical implications.

  • Mentalizing individuals, families and systems: Towards a translational socioecological approach.

    Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is a spectrum of interventions that share a central focus on improving the capacity for mentalizing. Although MBT was originally developed as a treatment for individuals with borderline personality disorder, its scope and focus have been broadened to become a socioecological approach that stresses the role of broader sociocultural factors in determining the closely related capacities for mentalizing and epistemic trust. This special issue brings together some of the newest developments in MBT that illustrate this shift. These contributions also highlight several current limitations in mentalization-based approaches, providing important pointers for further research. In this editorial, we first outline the broadening scope of the mentalizing approach, and then provide a discussion of each of the contributions to this special issue in the context of the need for further research concerning some of the key assumptions of mentalization-based approaches and their implementation in clinical practice. We close this editorial with considerations concerning future research.

  • Can you tell me more about that? An examination of self-disclosure in videoconference and face-to-face psychological interviewing.

    Videoconference psychotherapy (VCP) is a crucial component of many health care systems, allowing for remote delivery of services. However, little is known about the mechanisms of change within VCP. Previous research has suggested that self-disclosure may be greater in VCP than face-to-face modalities and was investigated in the current study. Young adults aged 18-25 years (N = 57) were randomly allocated to face-to-face or VCP interview conditions, with measures completed pre- and post-interview. Participants completed an autobiographical memory task, requiring them to describe specific memories in response to positive and negative valence cue words. Measures included self-reported self-disclosure, blind observer-rated self-disclosure, memory specificity, and mean number of words per response. No significant differences were found between conditions with regard to self-reported self-disclosure, capacity to recall specific memories, or words uttered per response. However, observer-rated depth of self-disclosure was significantly higher for participants in the face-to-face than VCP condition. Self-disclosure and memory specificity were also significantly greater for negative than positive valence cue words, regardless of condition. The findings indicate that whilst participants may be able to draw on memories with equal ease regardless of interview modality, in VCP, emotional processing of these memories may require increased support and guidance from the therapist.

  • Depth of emotional experiencing and outcome in therapy with young people.

    To analyse the relationship between depth of emotional experiencing and outcomes in young people. We also wanted to understand whether 'early' or 'working' depth of emotional experiencing was most predictive of outcomes, and how these compared against alliance effects. Hierarchical linear regression analysis of data from a study of school-based humanistic counselling (SBHC). Data from 60 young people were used for the study across 15 schools: mean age 13.7 years old (range: 13-16); 67% female; 52% from Black, mixed or non-white ethnicities. Depth of emotional experiencing was rated using the Client Experiencing Scale at session 1 (early EXP) and session 6 (working EXP). The dependent variable was changes in psychological distress from baseline to 12-week follow-up, as assessed by the Young Person's CORE. In our final model, working EXP accounted for 11.6% of the variance in YP-CORE change scores after baseline YP-CORE scores were taken into account. Early EXP and working alliance were not predictive of benefit. Sensitivity analyses indicated that working EXP was associated with benefits across a range of indicators. Our findings show, for the first time, that depth of emotional experiencing has a significant and sizeable association with outcomes in therapy for young people. This is consistent with emerging evidence from the adult field. It suggests that practitioners working with young people should monitor the depth of emotional experiencing and foster methods for supporting its development.
