Injury Prevention was launched in March 1995 as the official journal of the International Society for Child and Adolescent Injury Prevention. Within a few years it broadened its focus to include the prevention of all types of injuries in all age groups. In addition to Original Articles, Brief Reports and Methodological Issues, Injury Prevention includes a News and Notes section and many other special features: program reports, guest editorials, commentaries, fillers, book reviews, and letters. The papers reflect the Journal's international orientation, and the large and distinguished editorial board represents 20 different countries.

Geospatial analysis of injury severity on major roads in Ghana (2017-2020): implications for targeted injury prevention and control initiatives.
Road safety authorities in high-income countries use geospatial motor vehicle collision data for planning hazard reduction and intervention targeting. However, low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) rarely conduct such geospatial analyses due to a lack of data. Since 1991, Ghana has maintained a database of all collisions and is uniquely positioned to lead data-informed road injury prevention and control initiatives. We identified and mapped geospatial patterns of hotspots of collisions, injuries, severe injuries and deaths using a well-known injury severity index with geographic information systems statistical methods (Getis-Ord Gi*). We identified specific areas (4.66% of major roads in urban areas and 6.16% of major roads in rural areas) to target injury control. Key roads, including National Road 1 (from the border of Cote D'Ivoire to the border of Togo) and National Road 6 (from Accra to Kumasi), have a significant concentration of high-risk roads. A few key road sections are critical to target for injury prevention. We conduct a collaborative geospatial study to demonstrate the importance of addressing data and research gaps in LMICs and call for similar future research on targeting injury control and prevention efforts.

Road traffic safety for older adults: an emerging public health challenge in Thailand.
Road safety for older adults should receive more attention in low-income and middle-income countries with rapidly ageing populations. Using injury surveillance data from Khon Kaen Regional Hospital in northeastern Thailand, we calculated the proportion of older adults in the total number of patients who were fatally and non-fatally injured in road traffic crashes in each year from 2001 to 2020 and the proportion of road user type in the fatal and non-fatal patients by age groups for the entire study period to examine the extent to which older adults were involved in the crashes and with what mode of transportation. During the 20-year period, there were 5046 fatal and 180 353 non-fatal patients of whom 509 (10%) and 6087 (3%) were aged 65 years or older, respectively. From 2001 to 2020, this proportion increased from 3% to 20% among the fatal patients and from 1% to 6% among the non-fatal patients. Of the fatal and non-fatal patients aged 65 years or older, 50% and 54% were involved in road traffic crashes while driving motorcycles and 28% and 22% while riding bicycles or walking, respectively. Compared with patients aged 65-74 years, those aged 75 years or older tended to be bicyclists or pedestrians in the crashes, though as high as 40% of them were motorcycle drivers. Older adults are increasingly injured in road traffic crashes as vulnerable road users in Thailand. Therefore, road safety efforts should consider their presence on the road.

Exploratory qualitative study of firearm storage practices among surgeons in the USA: contexts and motivations.
A US survey of surgeons found that 32% store firearms unlocked and loaded. This study explored conditions and contexts impacting personal firearm storage methods among surgeons. We conducted semi-structured interviews with English-speaking fellows of the American College of Surgeons who treated patients injured by firearms and who owned or lived in homes with firearms. Participants were recruited through email and subsequent snowball sampling from April 2022 to August 2022. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was applied to transcripts to identify codes. A mixed deductive and inductive approach was used for data reduction and sorting. A total of 32 surgeons were interviewed; most were male and white. Dominant themes for firearm storage practices were based on (1) attitudes; (2) perceived norms; (3) personal agency; and (4) intention of firearm use. Personal agency often conflicted with attitudes and perceived norms for surgeons owning firearms for self-defence. Storage practices in this sample of firearm-owning surgeons were driven by intent for firearm use, coupled with attitudes, perceived norms and personal agency. Personal agency often conflicted with attitudes and perceived norms, especially for surgeons who owned their firearm for self-defence.

Public support for logbooks during the supervised practice driving phase of graduated driver licensing: a national survey of teens and parents in the USA.
Verification of the completion of supervised practice driving hours for teenagers is challenging. Electronic logbooks could provide an objective alternative to paper logbooks. Factors influencing the adoption of electronic logbooks are poorly understood. We conducted a survey of a nationally representative sample of teenagers and parents in the USA to address these gaps in understanding. The survey was fielded to teenagers who were currently learning to drive or had a full driver's licence, and parents of teenager with a learner's permit or a driver's licence. We measured (1) support for supervised practice driving requirements and logbook requirements, (2) preferences between paper and electronic logbooks and (3) features that would make an electronic logbook useful. Most parents and teenagers supported both supervised practice driving and logbook requirements. The overwhelming majority of teenagers and parents preferred an electronic logbook over paper. Electronic logbooks that provide (1) summary information about completed drives, (2) parent certification of drives and (3) automatic trip detection were features that were rated most useful by respondents. This is the first study to measure teen and parent support for the logbook format to track supervised practice driving. Public support for electronic logbooks is high, suggesting that policy makers could consider adding an electronic logbook requirement to graduated driver licensing systems to objectively measure completed practice driving hours. Driver educators could also promote the use electronic logbooks to track practice and calibrate behind-the-wheel lessons to the amount of practice driving that has been completed.
