The aim of the journal is to promote clinical progress, research and the exchange of research information within the whole field of general surgery. In 1996 the journal Theoretical Surgery (formerly Springer Verlag) was incorporated into The European Journal of Surgery in a section called Beyond the Scalpel . The journal publishes original scientific reports (clinical and experimental), descriptions of surgical techniques, review papers, case reports and letters from all parts of the world within the field of general surgery: gastrointestinal hepatopancreatobiliary colorectal endocrine oncological paediatric trauma vascular endoscopic intensive care Only papers giving a significant contribution to the advancement of surgical knowledge are accepted. Editorials, Clinical Reviews and Book Reviews are published on invitation from the Editors. The journal is published for the Society for the Publication of Acta Chirurgica Scandinavica, founded by Professor Axel Key in 1869, and sponsored by the Key Foundation, Sweden. Discontinued in 2003.
