Nurse-Led Interventions in Managing Cancer-Related Fatigue: A Systematic Review.
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is common among patients with cancer. Various interventions have been reported to reduce fatigue, and some evidence suggests that nurse-led interventions may be effective in the management of CRF. A systematic review was conducted to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions for CRF in patients with cancer and survivors. The aim of this study was to review and appraise the evidence for the effectiveness of different types of nurse-led interventions on fatigue in patients with cancer and survivors. Electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were searched to identify studies published from January 2013 to October 2023. The studies that described nurse-led interventions in patients with cancer or survivors regardless of treatment duration, modes of intervention delivery, and any based intervention were included. The studies were excluded if no fatigue was an outcome measure. Twelve studies from 2013 to 2023 were included and eligible for the review. Nine studies obtained a Jadad score of 3 or more, indicating high quality for the quality assessment. Eleven of the included studies reported a significant effect of the nurse-led interventions in reducing fatigue in patients with cancer or survivors. Nurse-led interventions that focus on multidisciplinary, exercise, psychological, and behavioral approaches appear promising in the management of CRF. More research is needed in order to determine the most acceptable forms of intervention. The development of evidence-based interventions for managing CRF is significant to nursing practice.

Virtual Reality to Reduce Pain, Fatigue, and Emotional Distress in People With Cancer: A Scoping Review.
Cancer and its treatments cause symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and emotional distress, which affect the quality of life of patients at different stages of cancer. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising alternative for addressing these symptoms by immersing patients in a virtual environment that isolates them from reality. To describe the existing evidence on the use of VR to improve pain, fatigue, and emotional distress in people with cancer at different stages of the cancer trajectory. A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines. Search was conducted in PubMed and CINAHL until October 2023. Twenty-three primary studies related to the study topic were identified, and the following information was collected: type of VR (immersive vs nonimmersive) used in oncology services, purpose (distraction, training, or relaxation), devices used (head-mounted display, headset, or virtual controller), and the environment simulated (natural environment, skill games, or educational environment). The effects of VR on pain, fatigue, and emotional distress are described, highlighting its ability to mitigate these symptoms in the short term. Virtual reality has been shown to be an effective technique for reducing pain, fatigue, and emotional distress in people with cancer in the short term. Nurses can use VR as a complementary tool to promote virtual environments that improve the care for and therefore the quality of life of people with cancer.

Nursing Recommendations for Symptom-Specific Self-care of Low Anterior Resection Syndrome: A Systematic, Scoping Review of the Literature.
Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a result of removing part or most of the rectum as a treatment for rectal cancer that negatively impacts quality of life. There is a lack of standardized nursing symptom-specific self-care recommendations for patients suffering from LARS. The aim of this study was to map the existing research regarding nursing guidelines and symptom-specific recommendations for LARS self-care. A systematic scoping review using 4 comprehensive databases (ProQuest, EMBASE, PubMed, and Web of Science) was completed using the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. Applying specified search terms, relevant articles were extracted using criteria and entered into an Excel database. Three publications met the study inclusion criteria: 1 randomized controlled pilot study; 1 nonrandomized, retrospective pilot study; and 1 retrospective, comparative, cross-sectional study. No professional nursing guidelines were found, but 3 nurse-led management programs were reviewed. Publications provided self-care nursing recommendations for all LARS symptoms except for repeated painful stools/tenesmus, soiling, or discrimination disorders/flatulence. Combination of nursing self-care recommendations included dietary/lifestyle modifications, fiber supplements/bulking agents, antidiarrheal and laxative over-the-counter medications, and pelvic floor muscle exercises. When mapping the literature, there appears to be nurse-led management programs and recommendations for self-care for patients with LARS for almost all symptoms. Yet, there are no standardized recommendations. Professional nursing practice guidelines for all symptoms are lacking. Nursing recommendations for self-care of LARS exist and need to be expanded and standardized to include all symptoms. Further research regarding comprehensive nursing self-care recommendations and management is warranted.
