Genetica publishes papers dealing with genetics, genomics, and evolution. Our journal covers novel advances in the fields of genomics, conservation genetics, genotype-phenotype interactions, evo-devo, population and quantitative genetics, and biodiversity. Genetica publishes original research articles addressing novel conceptual, experimental, and theoretical issues in these areas, whatever the taxon considered. Biomedical papers and papers on breeding animal and plant genetics are not within the scope of Genetica, unless framed in an evolutionary context. Recent advances in genetics, genomics and evolution are also published in thematic issues and synthesis papers published by experts in the field. mtDNA diversity and genetic lineages of eighteen cattle breeds from Bos taurus and Bos indicus in China.
In order to clarify the origin and genetic diversity of indigenous cattle breeds in China, we carried out phylogenetic analysis of representatives of those breeds by employing mitochondrial gene polymorphism. Complete cyt b gene sequences, 1140 bp in length, were determined for a total of 136 individuals from 18 different breeds and these sequences were clustered into two distinct genetic lineages: taurine (Bos taurus) and zebu (Bos indicus). In analysis of the cyt b gene diversity, Chinese cattle showed higher nucleotide (0.00923) and haplotype diversity (0.848) than the reports from other studies, and the animals from the taurine lineage indicated higher nucleotide diversity (0.00330) and haplotype diversity (0.746) than the ones from the zebu lineage (0.00136; 0.661). The zebu mtDNA dominated in the southern breeds (63.3-100%), while the taurine dominated in the northern breeds (81.8-100%). Six cattle breeds from the central area of China exhibited intermediate frequencies of zebu mtDNA (25-71.4%). This polymorphism revealed a declining south-to-north gradient of female zebu introgression and a geographical hybrid zone of Bos taurus and Bos indicus in China.

Age-specific effects of novel mutations in Drosophila melanogaster II. Fecundity and male mating ability.
Evolutionary theories of senescence assume that mutations with age-specific effects exist, yet until now, there has been little experimental evidence to support this assumption. In this study, we allowed mutations to accumulate in an outbred, wild population of Drosophila melanogaster to test for age-specific differences in both male mating ability and fecundity. We assayed for age-specific effects of mutations after 10, 20, and 30 generations of mutation accumulation. For mating ability, we found the strongest effects of mutations in the first half of the life span after 20 generations, and at nearly all ages by generation 30. These results are qualitatively consistent with results from a companion study in which age-specific mortality was assayed on the same lines of D. melanogaster. By contrast, effects of fecundity were confined to late ages after 20 generations of mutation accumulation, but by generation 30, as with male mating ability, effects of novel mutations were distributed across all age classes. We discuss several possible explanations for the differences that we observe between generations within traits, and among traits, and the relevance for these patterns to models of aging as well as models of mate choice and sexual selection.

Visualization of pathogenicity regions in bacteria.
:We show here how pathogenicity islands can be analysed using GenomeAtlases, which is a method for visualising repeats, DNA structural characteristics, and base composition of chromosomes and plasmids. We have applied this method to the E. coli plasmid pO157, and the Y. pestis plasmid pPCP1. In both cases pathogenic genes were shown to differ in A + T content and structural properties. Furthermore, examination of an antibiotic resistance gene cluster from S. typhimurium showed that the same was true for genes encoding antibiotic resistance.

Dispersal of the cotton boll weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in South America: evidence of RAPD analysis.
:RAPD technique provides useful information on the geographic origin and dispersal of the boll weevil Anthonomus grandis in South America. Nine populations from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Mexico and USA were analyzed. Weevils were captured on native plants (Misiones province, Argentina) and on cotton cultures, except the sample from the United States (USDA laboratory-reared colony). A sample of the 'Peruvian square weevil', A. vestitus, from Ecuador, was included in the analysis in order to compare interspecific variation. The four primers used in the analysis revealed 41 'anonymous loci'. The neighbor-joining tree based on Nei's distances and values of Nm (migrants per generation), indicate that genetic similarity between samples from Tecomán (Mexico) and Puerto Iguazú (Argentina), is higher than among remaining South American populations. This result supports an hypothesis of natural occurrence of the boll weevil in South America, prior to extensive cotton cultivation. Population outbreaks of the species would be associated with increase of agricultural lands.

Transposable elements as the key to a 21st century view of evolution.
:Cells are capable of sophisticated information processing. Cellular signal transduction networks serve to compute data from multiple inputs and make decisions about cellular behavior. Genomes are organized like integrated computer programs as systems of routines and subroutines, not as a collection of independent genetic 'units'. DNA sequences which do not code for protein structure determine the system architecture of the genome. Repetitive DNA elements serve as tags to mark and integrate different protein coding sequences into coordinately functioning groups, to build up systems for genome replication and distribution to daughter cells, and to organize chromatin. Genomes can be reorganized through the action of cellular systems for cutting, splicing and rearranging DNA molecules. Natural genetic engineering systems (including transposable elements) are capable of acting genome-wide and not just one site at a time. Transposable elements are subject to regulation by cellular signal transduction/computing networks. This regulation acts on both the timing and extent of DNA rearrangements and (in a few documented cases so far) on the location of changes in the genomes. By connecting transcriptional regulatory circuits to the action of natural genetic engineering systems, there is a plausible molecular basis for coordinated changes in the genome subject to biologically meaningful feedback.
